The pulp and paper industry depends on consistent flow of stock to ensure the even development of fiber properties. Stock consistency affects most operations, including washing, bleaching, refining, blending and additives addition in order to achieve final product quality and the ability to reproduce paper characteristics from run to run.
Consistency transmitters are integral to all of these operations and a variety of measurement technologies are required to provide useful and repeatable values.
Consistency is an inferred measurement because it is not a direct physical property, and that complicates the challenge to provide a meaningful value.
Tecumseth represents the entire line of Valmet consistency transmitters – blade, rotary, microware and optical – for any and every solids measurement from very heavy to very light.
The Valmet technologies are well known for their stability, reliability and longevity and Tecumseth will provide the expertise required to ensure they are properly positioned, installed and commissioned.
These technologies are all in advanced phases of evolution and have achieved the status of providing unquestioned ability. Valmet consistency transmitters are the industry standard.
A continuous chip moisture measurement to improve digester operation and cooking liquor dosage.
The Valmet online wood chip moisture measurement has been designed to acquire chip samples, detect moisture (0-70%) and return the sample to the feed stream. Valmet expertise in the use of microwave technology to measure moisture content in paper and board has been extended to the difficult application of chip water content. The primary variable, resonance frequency, is compensated against variations of material temperature and Q-value, which are defined by material density inside the measuring cell.
A sampling unit that provides continuous sample flow is installed on a vertical chute. The sample flow is retrieved from the main chip flow by a retrieval screw that is inserted into the chip chute. If chips are frozen, the collection chamber is heated to thaw the chips and allow consistent measurement. A return screw compresses the chips and pushes the sample through the Valmet CBA sensor and then into the downfall chute.

Infrared drying supplements dryers: Maximize Sheet Trim; Remove Persistent Streaks; Improve Sheet Quality.
SELAS High Intensity (HI-IR) Infrared drying systems are used for Cross Direction CD Drying or for correction of wet edges. This technology provides huge energy cost savings by reducing the need to over-dry the bulk of the sheet in order to bring wet edges into specification. That often results in additional fiber being included in addition to the sheet being dryer than it could be.
The edge drying system is particularly useful for drying wet edges or streaks after coating applications.

Modern Paper machines bring high expectations on auxiliary equipment such as pulpers. Low energy consumption in combination with high capacities is a big challenge.
Cellwood Machinery is a world leader in pulper design and dispersing systems. Grubbens pulper designs include every possible application and configuration that is required for all pulping needs. The Grubbens vertical Pulper and S-Rotor allows for a high operating consistency in both batch and continuous operation for bales, broke and wet strength applications. The Grubbens horizontal pulpers are low energy consumers and can be designed for any mill location. Their S-rotors have been designed for high consistency performance with low energy consumption. The G-rotor design generates optimum performance without the need for strainer plates.
Cellwood also rebuilds pulpers using the well established Grubbens expertise to provide cost effective solutions that address mill capacity, energy, throughput and maintenance issues. A Grubbens rebuild will provide a large increase in capacity while lowering energy usage, improving pulp quality and reducing maintenance costs.
The Cellwood pulping system by Grubbens epitomizes what a fully engineered system must deliver. The Grubbens Reject Separator is an integrated unit with a high consistency pulper and contains the screen plate for the system. Pulp impurities are removed without heavy particles being discharged against the rotor and screen plate. Grubbens designs pay special attention to ease of maintenance of the rotor and screen.
Grubbens High Density Cleaners take care of unwanted particles and removes them from the suspension using the vortex separation principle. Parts that have a higher density than the pulp, such as screws, nails, staples, steel parts, stones and pebbles are effectively removed and gathered in the reject chamber.
Grubbens centrifugal pumps from Cellwood Machinery are specially designed for transportation of liquids with variable consistency, or liquids containing air bubbles and lumps.
Stock concentration up to 8% can be pumped without in-feed pressure. With in-feed pressure it can even manage to pump up to 12%. It has a strength and stability which makes it suitable for a wide range of applications.
The conical-concave rotor acts as an impeller to give the pump high hydraulic efficiency and problem free pulp transportation. The self-ventilating rotor has no constrictions and therefore minimizes the risk of blocking.
Deflakers are used for separating fibres in broke systems, virgin pulp systems and waste handling.
In the Grubbens Deflaker the pulp passes through eight vibration zones under continuous flow reversals and is therefore well processed without fibre bundles regardless of the low peripheral speed. The design of the deflaking discs allows compensation of wear through axial movement of the rotor disc. The discs are made of hardened, acid-resistant steel with Brinell hardness of about 400 HB.
Dewatering of stock for subsequent pulping operations is a critical part of system efficiency and pulp quality. The Krima Screw Dewaterer by Cellwood is built on many years of dewatering experience. Development and evolution has included ongoing improvements to function, reliability and service.
The Krima Screw Dewaterer can treat fibre suspensions up to a consistency of 20%. It is used for dewatering of: screen rejects; cleaner rejects; knots; semi-chemical pulp; waste paper fibre; chemi-mechanical pulp; fibre sludge; and high-yield pulp.
The Krima Screw Press is a highly developed unit that operates with a pneumatically controlled cone and a tapered screw core. The pneumatic system provides easy means for controlling the back-pressure to achieve the required solids content. The Krima Screw Presses are particularly well-suited for dewatering following an inclined screen or other primary dewatering unit and will produce outlet pulp consistency of up to 35%.

Recognized as the best system available for dispersing waxes, hot melts, bitumen, stickies, laser ink as well as heavy colours, the Krima Dispersing System excels at making these contaminants effectively disappear.
The Krima Hot Dispersing System is Cellwood Machinery’s solution to optimize the performance, flexibility and operating cost on varying degrees of raw material and required results. It has a capability to operate at temperatures up to 120°C (248°F). As the most advanced system, the Krima Hot Dispersing System produces the best dispersing result for all kinds of dispersible contaminants in waste paper.
Retention time through the system is 2 minutes which is enough for in-line bleaching and a high reduction of spores and bacteria in the pulp. Discharge of the Krima Screw Press KSR does not need to be pressurized as the downstream Krima Plug Screw is designed to seal the system.
The Krima Compact Dispersing System is a non-pressurized system with capability to operate at temperatures up to 95°C (203°F). Retention time in the heating zone is 20–30 seconds. This unit is typically followed by a Krima Screw Press KSR equipped with automatic torque control to ensure a highly uniform discharge consistency. The design also allows existing dewatering equipment to be used.
Fibre development and contaminant dispersing is completed with an integrated system that includes bleaching as part of the recycled paper system. It is possible to both pre-bleach and post-bleach stock with different chemicals around the Krima Dispersing System.
This process features:
The best refining results are achieved when the inlet consistency is between 20 and 35% and the Krima Refiner is designed specifically for this application.
The technically superior and patented infeed zone allows treatment of all types of fibers without risk of blocking. The infeed zone also contributes to the very low energy consumption. The Refiner provides a high pumping effect which feeds the pulp directly to the machine vat or storage tower.

Excellence in fabric conditioning and vacuum system dewatering is essential to machine performance. Regain efficiency and upgrade performance of this critical area in sheet development.
An evolutionary step in fiber solids removal from process water, the Rotary Drum Microfilter ensures the separation of fibers from water. Filter fabric can be selected to accomplish fast rates of filtration or to clarify water so that only very minute particles remain. Water can be clarified to use in place of fresh water on mill showers or as a final clarification before mill effluent discharge. The Rotary Drum Microfilter is often used after existing Disc Savealls and DAFs, or as upgrade replacements for these units.
